The Technician conducts metrology and testing activities, calibrates equipment, ensures compliance with safety and performance standards, and maintains calibration standards and test equipment to ensure measurement accuracy.

 

Job Purpose

Under the general guidance of a Metrologist, a Senior Metrologist or the Branch's Manager, the Technician applies knowledge of measurement science, mathematics, physics and electronics to perform metrology and/or testing activities. These activities include calibrating inspection, measurement, and test equipment (IM&TE) in one of the following Metrology laboratories: Time & Frequency, AC/DC, Energy and Temperature, to ensure measurement accuracy; conducts test on electrical/electronic products to ensure conformance to local and international safety or performance standards in the interest of public safety and fair trade; identifying and utilizing appropriate measurement or test procedures; performing corrective actions to address identified measurements or test problems; making minor adjustments to equipment, test circuits and standards to accomplish unique measurements or tests; maintaining calibration standards and test equipment; and performing laboratory and/or departmental housekeeping.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The Technician performs Product Testing and/or Metrology related duties.

Product Testing

  • Prepares test items in accordance with technical standards and/or work instructions for assigned laboratory(ies).
  • Set up test equipment/apparatus required to perform tests and assessments.
  • Performs conformance testing and assessment of electrical/electronic products for example, circuit breakers, panel boards, juice extractors, televisions, and other general appliances.
  • Investigates consumer complaints by testing and evaluating products that form the centre of disputes.
  • Prepares test reports
  • Updates Job Management Database to ensure easy monitoring and tracking of test items.
  • Updates Tested Products list.
  • Assists Engineer/Senior Engineer with research work necessary for the development of national standards for electrical practices, processes and products.
  • Performs routine maintenance on testing equipment according to schedule and relevant procedures.
  • Assists in development projects for the product testing laboratories by making recommendations as to equipment and accessories needed.
  • Represents the BSJ at outdoor promotions.

Metrology

  • Calibrate IM&TE in one of the following laboratories — Time & Frequency, AC/DC, Energy and Temperature — in order to ensure compliance with published specifications.
  • Assists engineer in maintaining primary and/or intrinsic calibration standards.
  • Assists engineer in maintaining secondary and/or working calibration standards.
  • Collects, compiles, measures, summarizes and records data gathered during calibration.
  • Analyzes measurement data for identifying abnormalities, trends, trends and/or predicting future values
  • Identifies IM&TE out-of-tolerance conditions and performs corrective action via adjustments component replacement, correction factors, etc.
  • Identifies and corrects measurement errors, as applicable.
  • Prepares calibration reports and certificates
  • Recommends IM&TE for use in measurement applications.
  • Make minor adjustments to existing calibration equipment, standards and techniques to accomplish unique measurement tasks for which they are not principally used.
  • Performs laboratory housekeeping
  • Assists in maintaining laboratory recognition or accreditation.

 

Unusual Requirements/Working Conditions:

The position, due to its nature, may require:

  • work beyond scheduled hours of work to meet important deadlines
  • lifting and positioning large and/or heavy objects, including equipment, fixtures and samples
  • research into test and calibration methods for non-routine requests from customers

 

Minimum Educational Requirements:

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering or its equivalent, from a recognized tertiary institution

 

Experience:

  • At least two years of related experience in a laboratory environment

 

Knowledge, Skills and abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the Standards and Weights and Measures Act
  • Knowledge of maintenance systems, practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of technical report writing
  • Knowledge of quality management systems
