The incumbent organizes and leads diverse sports events, provides personalized guest service, manages equipment inventory, and ensures safety, embodying Holland America's values as a brand ambassador.

 

This role:

  • Holds the rank of 1 stripe officer. 
  • Is hired, scheduled, and operationally managed by the Manager, Activities ashore. 
  • Reports to the Host (Lead). 
  • Shared cabin (double).

 

Key Job Responsibilities

The Sports Director plays a key role in hosting a variety of engaging sports, fitness, and social activities for guests of all ages, embodying the Company’s brand and quality standards. While flexibility is essential, primary responsibilities include:

  • Host a range of sports and fitness events, including aquatics, yoga, Tai Chi, pickleball, shuffleboard, basketball, social dances, and more, creating enjoyable experiences for both children and adults.
  • Provide personalized, high-quality customer service, ensuring each guest feels welcomed and supported.
  • Schedule and organize activities in partnership with the Host Lead, and facilitate guest meet-ups as detailed in The Book.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly environment in all sports and activity areas, following Company guidelines and standards.
  • Track inventory of sports equipment, consumables, books, and games, placing orders or repairs as necessary.
  • Remain knowledgeable about shipboard events and available resources to assist guests effectively.
  • Encourage use of the Navigator App and other tools to enhance guest satisfaction and onboard engagement.
  • Serve as a Brand Ambassador, embodying the Holland America brand’s values and presenting yourself according to the Company’s look-book.
  • Offer assistance in youth facilities and High Score! areas as requested by management.
  • Maintain the physical strength and health required for the active nature of the role.
  • Adhere to all Health, Environmental, Safety, and Security policies to ensure a safe environment for guests and staff.
  • Additional duties include performing other job-related tasks as assigned by management.


Key Desired Skills and/or Experience:

  • Skilled in planning, organizing, and executing a variety of sports and fitness activities, such as tournaments, classes, and group workouts, tailored to diverse skill levels. 
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills to engage and motivate participants, provide clear instructions, and resolve guest concerns. 
  • Proven background in teaching or leading sports classes and events, engaging participants of all skill levels. 
  • Must be fluent in English, both spoken and written, to meet job requirements
