Assesses and diagnoses Leprosy patients, plans treatment, facilitates rehabilitation, trains staff, and conducts research to improve care quality and outcomes.

 

JOB PURPOSE:

This position is responsible for the assessment and diagnosis of persons presenting with symptoms of chronic bacterial infection of Leprosy with the objective of improving the quality of life. Duties include the planning and scheduling of administration treatment; facilitation of rehabilitation and support; education and training of medical, nursing and ancillary support staff. The incumbent is also required to undertake research to ensure practical knowledge remains current. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts clinics in the peripheral Health Centres. These are combined Hansen’s disease/Dermatology Clinics. 
  • Conducts other activities related to case detection e.g. school surveys for the examination of school children in schools where Hansen’s disease has been detected. 
  • Conducts other activities related to management e.g. perform home visits for patients requiring this service. 
  • Supervises activities of field staff including Medical Social Worker, Follow-up Worker, District Health Visitors and other grades. 
  • Collates monthly reports for office records and to facilitate transmission of information to relevant authorities. 
  • Maintains registers of new patients and those under surveillance and care also treatment registers. 
  • Prepares statistics for the purpose of periodic evaluation of the Hansen’s disease programme and submission of the annual report. 
  • Teaches nursing students, medical students and doctors re: Hansen’s disease, persons on attachment. 
  • Participates in Health Education activities.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE: 

  • Knowledge of the etimology of Hansen’s Disease 
  • Knowledge of treatment options 
  • Knowledge of up-to-date research and treatment guidelines 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

  • Planning and co-ordination

  • Ability to train and teach 
  • Research Skills

 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Considerable experience in the field of medicine or a recognized post graduate qualification.
  • Training as evidenced by the possession of a medical degree from a recognized school of medicine; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. 
  • Registration as a Medical Practitioner by the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago.
