The Senior Accountant leads financial closings, ensures US GAAP compliance, supports budgeting, streamlines reporting, manages audits, enhances controls, and drives improvements in financial operations.

 

Senior Accountant

This position reports to the Assistant Vice President, Financial Controller, Bermuda Finance, and is responsible for assisting in finance transformation projects and the overall financial controllership of our Bermuda jurisdiction. The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of financial information and providing strategic insights to senior management.

 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and overseeing the preparation and review of monthly journal entries and account reconciliations to ensure accuracy in monthly financial closings, maintaining SOX-compliant working paper files.
  • Driving initiatives for streamlining and harmonising financial reporting, with a focus on loans and deposits, enhancing reporting efficiency and consistency.
  • Supporting Finance leadership in developing monthly financial variance reports, annual budgets, and rolling forecasts, providing strategic insights and analysis.
  • Ensuring compliance with US GAAP and Group accounting policies by preparing accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including all relevant note disclosures.
  • Collaborating in the design, implementation, and maintenance of robust internal controls and up-to-date departmental procedures to safeguard financial integrity.
  • Identifying and leading process improvement opportunities, recommending and implementing innovative solutions that enhance financial operations.
  • Preparing impactful materials for the Bermuda Asset Liability Management Committee (ALCO), contributing to effective balance sheet and risk management.
  • Assisting with overseeing aspects of accounts payable and ensuring efficient and timely management of payment processes.
  • Coordinating and managing the external audit process, including the preparation of comprehensive audit working papers and responses to auditor inquiries.
  • Analysing and explaining variances from budget and prior periods to inform management decision-making with clear, actionable insights.
  • Developing, monitoring, and refining general ledger policies and procedures to ensure alignment with best practices and compliance standards.

 

Your qualifications and skills include:

  • An accounting designation (CPA, CA or equivalent)
  • Minimum two years of accounting experience.
  • Direct banking experience with a strong understanding of banking products is preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a SOX control environment is considered beneficial.
  • Strong management, communication, and mediation skills, with a proven ability to effectively lead and manage employees.
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office, including Excel, and proficiency in database applications.
  • Familiarity with SAP or a similar General Ledger System is desirable.
  • Demonstrates a solid understanding of integrated complex systems and associated interfaces.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to multitask and prioritise effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail, maintaining high ethical standards at all times, with the ability to build trusting relationships.
  • Efficient time management skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines, including working outside of normal hours and on weekends and statutory holidays when necessary.
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive situations and confidential information with absolute discretion.
  • Have experience working in a fast-paced, high-performance environment, with a frequent need to adapt to change and implement new processes, procedures, and controls while maintaining a strong customer service focus.
