Dispensing of pharmaceuticals and specialized activities in drugs manufacture, supply and clinical pharmacy practice.

 

KEY OUTPUTS:

  • Safe and efficacious pharmaceuticals to consumers.
  • Technical information on pharmaceuticals.

 

RANGE OF ACTIVITIES:

  • Review and process prescription from prescribers.
  • Inspect and assess pharmacies and manufacturing facilities. 
  • Provide information and advice to patients with minor illnesses and often to those with more chronic conditions who are on established maintenance therapy. 
  • Control the quality of pharmaceuticals produced.
  • Train other health professionals in the use of essential drugs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Diploma in Pharmacy from the University of Guyana or equivalent.

 

DECISION MAKING, PROBLEM SOLVING AND IMPACT ON RESULTS: 

  • The job holder has to make complex decisions especially in substitute drugs. However, these are governed by pharmaceutical standards and practices. An error in histher decision making can result in unsafe and sub-standard pharmaceuticals being dispensed to people. 

 

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: 

  • The incumbent does not supervise any subordinate staff. While not being a budget holder, he/she has to manage stocks of pharmaceuticals or manufacturing and analytical equipment depending upon his/her area of responsibility. 

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

  • The job holder communicates with all levels of staff in the unit on technical information and with the students during training programmes. Also communicates with pharmaceutical manufactures and distributors. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This job is 80% office and 20% field conditions: hospital environment likely to be stressful. the job holder is exposed to chemicals which can be harmful.
