To assist the doctor in confirming the clinical diagnosis.

 

KEY OUTPUTS:

  • Reliable laboratory investigations by approved methods.
  • Accurately prepared reagents.
  • Accurately produced reports.
  • Updated methodologies to perform clinical examinations.

 

RANGE OF ACTIVITIES:

  • Collect various samples including blood from patients and ensure that it is properly preserved.
  • Instruct patients as regards to pre-requirements for tests.
  • Monitor sample collection in cases where they have to satisfy certain conditions.
  • Analyse samples in areas registered.
  • Report to doctors the suggested anti biotics for treatment in diseases related to micro biology cases.
  • Prepare chemical reagents for sampling tests.
  • Test instruments to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Keep abreast with scientific development and review methodologies to improve current methods.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A Diploma in Medical Technology from a recognised university PLUS Two (2) years working experience. 

 

DECISION MAKING, PROBLEM SOLVING AND IMPACT ON RESULTS:

  • The job holder is expected to function independently making decisions ranging from substituting chemicals or changing the complete method in a test. 
  • An error in drawing up liquid from pipette or the fluctuation of electricity can result in incorrect results being conveyed to doctors. 

 

RESOURCE MANAGEMENT:

  • The incumbent does not supervise any subordinate staff. He/she is not a budget holder nor is responsible for any cash or equipment. 

 

COMMUNICATIONS:

  • Apart from all levels of staff in the unit the incumbent relates to patients and members of the public on issues relating to laboratory examinations done for them. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This job is primarily office bound in a laboratory for about ninety percent (90%) of the time. The job holder is exposed to the hazards related to the use of chemicals in the execution of his/her duties.
