The incumbent performs mechanical maintenance, repairs, and inspections of facilities and equipment, ensures safety compliance, and supports the Senior Mechanical Technician in operational and inventory management.

 

Job Purpose:

The Mechanical Technician provides specialist technical expertise in the repair and maintenance of mechanical installations and equipment in health care institutions. The health institutions operate on a 24 hour basis, and accordingly this person may be required to work on shift or “on call” arrangements. The job may involve considerable travelling and fieldwork throughout the region.

The Authority reserves the right to assign the officer to any Facility under its management.

 

The core functions include but not limited to the following:

  • Performs mechanical engineering preventive maintenance and repair duties necessary to maintain facilities in the region.
  • Performs advanced mechanical maintenance, repairs and adjustments to large installations and equipment including chilled water systems.
  • Performs pre-inspections and arranges for successful statutory inspections for pressure vessels, hoists and steam boilers.
  • Inspects mechanical equipment at all SWRHA facilities to determine maintenance, repair, and replacement needs; report safety and fire hazards.
  • Consults with and obtain directions from the Senior Mechanical Technician to plan and execute mechanical engineering jobs related to the requirements of the region.
  • Assists Senior Mechanical Technician to develop and maintain a manual or computerised preventive maintenance system for the region.
  • Utilises the manual or computerised job administration system to ensure that all operating, maintenance and repair costs are recorded against individual assets.
  • Advises Senior Mechanical Technician on maintenance of parts and material inventory stocking.
  • Advises Senior Mechanical Technician on professional equipment necessary for ongoing maintenance.
  • Consults with the Senior Mechanical Technician to develop written objectives with time frames for the section.
  • Enforces health and safety regulations according to statutory requirements and applicable local and international safety standards and codes.
  • Consults with the Senior Mechanical Technician to develop and implement security systems for security protection of plant and property.
  • Ability to perform duties according to assigned rosters or plans that can be formulated in times of authorized service exigencies.
  • Ability to use the relevant computer applications related to job functions.
  • Performs any other related duties as may be assigned by the Authority.

 

Required Qualification, Training and Experience:

  • Successful completion of a Mechanical Engineering Technician’s Certificate course offered by an accredited technical institution.
  • Two years experience as a Mechanical Technician in a medium to large facility.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence.
