The Library Assistant I manages circulation, user registration, fines, collections, exhibits, document uploads, and statistics, while participating in professional development and evening/weekend rotations.

 

OVERVIEW:

This is an entry level classification for this position. To perform a variety of paraprofessional duties with structured supervision to include basic reference, circulation, supervised participation in special projects such as digitization; demonstrate above average oral and written communication skills; demonstrate sound judgment and trust; maintain the collections, and develop and provide services to patrons.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position of Library Assistant I is required to perform a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, the following: 

  • Operates the library circulation desk: check in and out, and renew library items using the automated system; 
  • Registers new library users and explains library policies and procedures; 
  • Distributes overdue and fine notices; 
  • Receives and accounts for all fees, fines and donations; 
  • Shelving, shelf reads and shift collections as needed; 
  • Scan, edit and upload documents to external drives or repositories as requested; 
  • Assists in the set-up and maintenance of library exhibits including exhibition cases and book displays; 
  • Prepares signage and posters as necessary; 
  • Under close supervision, manages reserve collection; 
  • Record, collect and compile relevant statistics; 
  • Participates in evening and weekend rotation schedule; 
  • Participates in workshops, seminars and webinars for professional development. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and use of web-based applications required;
  • Experience working in an academic library is preferred; 
  • Must be detail oriented; 
  • Attention to detail; 
  • Must be a team player.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate Degree in relevant area.
