JOB PURPOSE:

The GTR Campbell Small Island Sustainability Research Complex (SISRC) at University of The Bahamas is seeking an enthusiastic Laboratory Manager to thrive in a dynamic and stimulating educational and research environment. This role involves spearheading our laboratory operations and supporting a diverse range of research endeavours encompassing agriculture, food/nutrition, the environment, forestry, marine studies, and population genetics.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position of Laboratory Manager is required to perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to the following: 

  • Oversee all operations in several laboratories, including the genetics, soil, and chemistry spaces, within the GTR Campbell SISRC; 
  • Prepare and manage budgets for the labs; 
  • Lead a team of laboratory staff by providing guidance and training, as well as conducting performance evaluations; 
  • Oversee equipment procurement, installation, and maintenance; 
  • Develop, monitor and ensure compliance with safety protocols, quality assurance mechanisms, and regulatory guidelines; 
  • Ensure that the labs obtain international accreditation standards where necessary, for example, International Organization for Standards and Good Laboratory Practice (ISO 17025, ISO 9001, GLP); 
  • Develop and ensure the implementation of systems/databases to manage laboratory inventory, supplies, testing, and use by personnel; 
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in laboratory management; 
  • Make recommendations for the continuous improvement and optimal integration of the laboratory into both the University’s and the country’s research and development agendas;
  • Develop close working relationships with the vendors and their technical support team.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Experience in working with routine molecular biology techniques and Sanger sequencing;
  • Proven leadership skills with experience managing a team of laboratory personnel;
  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory operations, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance;
  • Experience working in challenging environments. 
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and software, including Excel, SPSS, and BioEdit;
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities, with an attention to detail;
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Problem-solving mindset, with the ability to troubleshoot technical challenges;
  • Familiar with the logistics, regulatory requirements and best practices for transporting supplies within this region.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Environmental Science or related field from an accredited university; 
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant laboratory management experience OR bachelor's degree with seven (7) years of experience.
