The Network Administrator manages BTVI's network, infrastructure, and technical communications, including servers, IP telephony, switches, routers, wireless networks, firewalls, WANs, LANs, and hosted environments.

 

JOB PURPOSE

The Network Administrator will be responsible for the overall management of the network, infrastructure and the technical communications environment within BTVI. This includes network servers, IP telephony, switches, routers, wireless networks, web servers, firewalls, WANs and LANs, along with hosted environments.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

Main Responsibilities

  • Maintain and monitor the security and performance of the network, keeping the servers and workstations, current with the latest virus definitions and OS updates.
  • Supports disaster recovery planning and executing disaster recovery activities and testing as required.
  • Maintain wireless networks and associated infrastructure.

Main Duties

  • Plan, install and document network equipment and software installations.
  • Performs regular server back-ups in compliance with established back up procedures.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of CCTV systems along with access control systems.
  • Install, secure and operate all infrastructure components.
  • Ensure that Cable Infrastructure (Cable Management System) is maintained at a high standard.
  • Maintain and ensure the security of computer labs, networks, servers, computer hardware, peripherals, and software that are used to support institutional functions.
  • Prepare reports of work requests, budget expenditures, purchase orders or materials usage as requested by the IT Director, or Designate.

 

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

  • Monitoring mechanisms are in place to provide standards and to guide infrastructure improvements as required.
  • Policies and procedures relating to network administration are in place and are up to date (no more than 2 years old).
  • Timely and accurate submission of monitoring and evaluation of IT infrastructure reports.

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems OR
  • Certified Training (Industry Certifications e.g. Cisco Certified Network Associate
  • (CCNA) and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) designations)

Required Experience

  • Ten (10) to Fifteen (15) years of experience in a similar post with five (5) years proficiency in managing virtual environments.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Server Operating Systems and Desktop Operating Systems.
  • Experience in Microsoft CLOUD, Asure Active Directory Veam, and VoIP phone systems.
  • Three (3) to Five (5) years of experience installing and maintaining computer network systems, hardware and software applications.

Specialised Knowledge

  • Good working knowledge of Internet technology i.e. HTML and Java scripting.

Working Conditions

  • Flexibility to travel to various BTVI locations.

Authority

  • Institute networking policies and protocols at the BVTI.
  • Manage the BVTI’s network monitoring processes in accordance with institute policies.
  • Assess network operations and make recommendations regarding upgrades and/or required changes.
  • Research background data and related details to inform network decisions.
