Under the supervision of the Farm Manager (SOG/ST 5), the Farm Hand (LMO/TS 2), is responsible for recording herd data, storage and retrieval of relevant documents.

 

KEY OUTPUTS

  • Data collected and stored

  • Animal records maintained 
  • Sick animals scheduled for treatment 
  • Animals fed and watered 
  • Animals accommodation cleaned and sanitized 
  • Established feeding system followed 
  • Receptive females identified for mating 
  • Scheduled husbandry practices viz. Deworming, spraying and weighing of animals carried out 
  • Animals births and death recorded and reported 
  • Animals in ill health identified, recorded and reported 
  • Minor repairs done to gates, pens and watering systems 
  • Animals identified in accordance with identification specification (ear notched, tattoo, ear tag etc.) 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS

  • Shepherds herds and flocks 
  • Ensures livestock is properly fed, watered and maintained 
  • Handles animals, and carries out husbandry and veterinary activities Monitors herds and flocks health 
  • Prepares and records animal data 
  • Schedules routine husbandry activities 
  • Schedules sick animals for treatment 
  • Assists in the reproductive management of animals through the identification and recording of heats and services 
  • Assists in the weighing of animals at all stages of development 
  • Carries out deworming and spraying procedures as scheduled 
  • Administers topical treatment for minor injuries 
  • Effects minor repairs to gates, pens and watering systems 
  • Assists in the security of animals under care and report discrepancies to the Livestock Research Officer
  • Ensures that pens are properly cleaned and sanitized on a daily basis 

Other responsibility 

  • Performs any other related functions assigned from time to time 

 

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • Animals identified and registered in a timely manner according to required guidelines
  • Animal data accurately collected and stored as required 
  • Listings of animals for specified treatment are comprehensive and accurate
  • Animal feeding and watering activities are done completely and in accordance with established standards and schedule 
  • Effects cleaning and sanitation activities of animal accommodation in agreement with established schedule 
  • Participation in herds reproductive activities done in accordance with established standards and schedule 
  • Participation in herds husbandry activities in agreement with established methods
  • General care and maintenance of animals (weighing spraying, deworming etc.) implemented in accordance with established schedules 
  • Daily monitoring of animals in accordance with herd health and security guidelines
  • Weigh animals as schedule in a manner that is complete and efficient
  • Ensures livestock is properly fed, watered and maintained 
  • Reports prepared and submitted in the required format and stipulated timeframe.
  • Effects minor repairs to gates, pens and watering systems in accordance with required standards and timeframe. 
  • Forms of agreements and other documents prepared in accordance with required format and standards.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Secondary school education/ school leaving certificate 

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB

  • Exposure to extreme environmental conditions including sun, wet, mud and dust
  • Exposure to parasites that are potentially zoonotic 
  • Exposure to animal excrement and other bodily fluids 
  • Exposure to hazardous chemical and drugs
