Under the general supervision of the Dietetic Assistant or Head Cook, the Cook will have the responsibility to prepare and portion meals as well as other activities associated with maintaining the kitchen in a safe and sanitary manner.

 

The ideal candidate will meet the following educational criteria:

  • Secondary/High School Diploma or equivalent 
  • NVQ-J certification from an approved institution or on the job training 
  • Valid Food Handlers permit 

 

Specific Knowledge Required:

  • Knowledge of methods and equipment used in preparing food on a large scale
  • Basic knowledge of nutrition 
  • Knowledge of reading recipes, menus and orders 
  • Knowledge of the proper use and care of various kinds of specialized kitchen equipment
  • Knowledge of basic HACCP principles 

 

Key Responsibility Areas:

  • Prepare meals and / or assigned menu items for patients and staff according to the menu in a sanitary and timely manner 
  • Portion in bulk and individually plate prepared meals (regular and special diets) for the various wards as determined by the supervisor 
  • Practice cleanliness during all stages of food preparation and service (including peeling, slicing/cutting seasoning and storing food items) and demonstrate a high standard of personal hygiene
  • Participate in the menu planning process
