Oversees Hematology and Blood Transfusion Services, ensures quality assurance, advises on transfusions, plans resources, introduces methodologies, conducts research, liaises with stakeholders, and provides expert guidance on policies.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supervises the technical functions of Hematology and Blood Transfusion Services
  • Ensures quality assurance within Hematology and Blood Transfusion Services
  • Advises clinicians as to the appropriateness of transfusions and ensures the safety of blood donors and recipients of blood products
  • Assumes lead role for forward planning for staff and equipment and communicating these to the Chief of Pathology
  • Assesses and introduces new technical methodology
  • Carries out appropriate research, reading and training
  • Performs administrative duties and assists on various committees, including liaison with outside organizations, e.g. Government departments, Red Cross
  • Provides advice to the Chief of Pathology, Chief of Staff and others in relation to the Hematology and Blood Transfusion areas
  • Advises on hospital policies for disaster planning
  • Liaises with consultants, hospital staff and general practitioners concerning appropriateness of testing and interpretation of results

 

Qualifications & Registration required:

  • Minimum Education DM, FRC Path or equivalent Pathology and Hematologic Pathology
  • Must be eligible for registration with Bermuda Medical Council and eligible for hospital privileges
  • Minimum of 5 years postgraduate experience Hematology & Blood Transfusion
  • Maintain Specialist qualification where qualified
