The Community Support Worker provides daily care and support to individuals with intellectual disabilities in various homes, ensuring clients achieve their maximum potential and a high quality of life.

 

Job Purpose

Under the supervision of the Multidisciplinary Intellectual Disability Team, the Community Support Worker will be expected to provide ongoing support, daily care and assistance to persons with intellectual disabilities, in various homes across the island. The homes consist of rest home environments, semi-independence and challenging behavior. The successful candidate will ensure that clients achieve their maximum potential and experience an excellent quality of life.

 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • supporting clients in person centered ways that treat them as individuals in order to enhance their quality of life
  • supporting clients to carry out a wide range of activities in their homes and in the community.  This could include practical activities such as bathing, dressing, bed making, toileting, cooking, eating and drinking
  • supporting clients to develop greater independence by engaging them in  a range of training programs, recreational and leisure activities
  • promoting good health and observing/monitoring and reporting clients’ physical/mental condition
  • advocating for the clients by being an active member of the Multidisciplinary Team
  • driving hospital transport when required, including escorting clients on outings and medical appointments
  • ensuring facilities are kept in good working order and reports any problems re the status of the home in a timely manner
  • assisting clients’ relatives/associates to establish positive relationship with clients which includes implementing programs within their home, if required
  • contributing to the effective and safe running of the house by carrying out the necessary cooking, cleaning, washing shopping etc in conjunction with the clients

 

Qualifications & Registration required:

  • High School Certificate, GED or equivalent
  • Nursing Assistant Certificate required with three years’ experience working with persons with Intellectual Disabilities. Those with less year’s will be considered.
  • Must be registered with the Bermuda Nursing Council
  • Safety care Certificate and CPR 
  • Must be capable of safely operating approved lifting devices
  • Must have a current driver’s license
